Thanks for walking by.

I’m Tanner Bowden. In 2015 I met a woman at a party in a ski town art gallery who happened to be an editor. She gave me my first paid writing work, interviewing professional skiers and snowboarders. A decade has passed and now I’ve been a senior staff writer at an award-winning publication in New York City, the managing editor of a design and outdoors website, and a freelancer for magazines you see at the airport.

Travel and photography have always been a part of my work. As an intern, I was sent kayaking in the Everglades with a company camera. I brought it back without water damage—and I had a story too—so they kept sending me places. Since then, I’ve been entrusted to write about and photograph skiing in Russia’s far east, a hut trip in the Spanish Pyrenees, and ice cream shops in my home state of Vermont.

Now I’m publishing my first book.

"The Observer’s Guide to Japanese Vending Machines"

is the unification of everything I’ve learned these past ten years. I’ve considered every word, photograph, and design element as if, like some of the stories I’ve written for other publications, it was destined to be seen by millions of readers.

The book is about Japanese vending machines, but it’s about more than that too. It’s more than 150 pages and there are nearly as many photographs inside. I’m beyond excited for you to see them.

What’s the deal with this newsletter?

I started Inside the Vending Machine as a way to share news and information about the book—like how to buy it—before it comes out. I’m only printing a limited number of copies and I want to make sure that anybody who wants one has a chance to get one.

Subscribers will have first access to the book when it comes out.

I won’t jam your inbox with frivolous “Coming Soon!” emails, promise. I will send you updates about printing, info about a launch party I’m planning (fall is a great time to visit Vermont!), plus how and when you’ll be able to purchase a copy. I’ll also share sneak peeks of some of the pages and behind the scenes images from the design and printing process.

I’ll keep these emails limited to one a week, if that. Subscribing for these updates is 100% free. Thanks for being here.
